Your role as a interpreter would consist of the following: · When the passengers arrive, they are processed through Customs. They proceed to the Medical Area (if needed). Then onto to the DSS area where they make arrangement for travel to their final destination. There are also stations where they can get food, coats and sweaters, hygiene products, etc. Plus there is a child care area. · You are helping people who may not speak English get through the process as smoothly and quickly as possible. Help them understand the forms, interpret their questions for the people who can answer them – all the time being kind and friendly. · You will be assigned to help interpret where needed – usually at the Medical Area or with the DSS support operation. (This is where people will make travel arrangements for their final destination, get lodging in · Red Cross and other human service agencies are at the end of the process and may need your help as well. (Red Cross will have food for evacuees and for volunteers (you). · Offer a warm welcome to the evacuees. You know that they’ve been through a lot and your hospitality will go a long way.
